A few weeks ago a lot of you shared your Christmas concerns with me. The ones that came up the most were all about Christmas Planning, Budgeting and Saving:
- I get nervous about committing to buying a gift too early or the recipient not liking it
- How you manage a budget and stick to it (the temptation to splurge more!)
- Money is tight, this year in particular – How can I save?
This blog post is designed to provide some real basic approaches to help you out.
Christmas Planning can be the most difficult things; I keep a notes table on my phone that is broken down:
|Name||Budget||Gifts Bought||Gift Ideas|
The easiest part is noting down everyone you need to get gifts for; from family-in-law, to close friends, children and everything in between. Against each one you can then set a budget (and figure out how much you can spend on each).
I start my Christmas shopping early, as it helps me spread the cost, but I keep a note of what I have bought so I don’t get tempted to buy too much/overspend.
I then also keep the fourth column updated as I go through the year with things people mention they would like/need or things I see when I think “that would be cute for X!”
Simple but effective… It also stops you from committing to early as you can always go back and order later from your ideas list 😊
Be realistic on your budget, getting into debt for gifts isn’t worth it, and nobody would expect you to. If you’re really worried about money this year think about setting limits with those close to you (or agreeing to do something different e.g. make something for a limited amount).
The great thing about the above planning approach is you can buy things when sales
- Getting Money Back
If you are not signed up to Top Cash Back, what is wrong with you?! It is literally free money. You search for a brand before you shop, it gives you the % you will get back, you click a link, you shop, they send the money back to you and then you withdraw it to your bank account. So far I’ve had £441 back which is great – It takes up to 6 months to get the money back but it does come
If you’re not a member you can sign up here ( full disclaimer, I get a referral fee! Which I’d appreciated 😊 This is just part of their standard tell-a-friend and is not linked to me recommending the site here.)
Don’t just use this for your Christmas shopping, do it for everything you buy online throughout the year and it’ll fill a nice little pot for Christmas for you.
- Discount Codes
Google the brand and discount codes before you buy (you can do it in addition to the above too in most instances!). They might not always work, but you may get free P&P or some discount
IF any brands provide me with a discount code I will continue to update them here for you. (None of which are affiliate, those marked with a (*) are part of the Mention Me program for which I’ll recieve store credit)
